About the Book
Abigail's First Day
at School
Abigail is only two years old, but her first day of school feels like the biggest day of her life. She eats breakfast with her parents, puts on her uniform, and starts to wonder what her teacher will be like. When the bell rings, Miss Lily walks in with a warm smile and a simple idea: draw something you love, then introduce yourself. Abby draws a heart and when Miss Lily pins it up on the classroom board, something in Abby shifts. She feels like she belongs.
As the day goes on, Abby starts learning names, noticing differences, and figuring out that making friends is not as hard as she thought. She connects with Suzanne, a freckle-faced girl with red wavy hair, and the two of them spend recess racing to the monkey bars, taking turns on the swings, and laughing until the worries from the morning are completely forgotten.
Then Abby spots a butterfly near a flower and gently cups it in her hands to bring to Miss Lily. The whole class gathers around. They learn to take turns, to be gentle, and to care for something small and fragile. When the butterfly finally flies away, Abby understands that letting go can be a kind thing too. By the end of the day, school does not feel so big anymore.
